Working Mom Friendly Employers

The ideal place for me to work – would be in a place where flexibility and support for working mothers (and some cases working parents in general) was provided by an employer. The cost of daycare/ child care, insurance costs and even gas prices can impact any working family’s budget. In speaking to some friends, especially to those with more than one child – some better quality child care can easily be the equivalent cost of another mortgage payment. Some friends have chosen to stay home to raise their children, knowing that it may affect their career stability with employers. Before having a child of my own, I wondered and even questioned why some of my friends who had their undergraduate and graduate degrees (and excelled in their fields), would choose to “take a break” from their careers by choosing to stay home rather than taking them to child care. Now, I understand completely.

If I had not found the care for my daughter with my college friend who chose to stay home and open a day care (for the sole purpose of being able to raise her children) while still being able to generate income – I don’t believe I could have decided to go back to work as soon as I did, in spite of knowing that at the end, it would impact the bottom line in our family budget. However, I still do believe that a lot more can be done on behalf of various entities (not just employers alone), to provide supportive work environments for working mothers. Here is a video I found on YouTube regarding working mothers at Cisco.

Ever since she came into our lives (mine and my husband’s), we’ve never been the same. Her existence has forced me to see the world with different lenses, to think more about our actions that would impact her future.

In the 2008 elections, we will be making decisions that would certainly impact our future and our children’s future. I was motivated to “restart” a blog that would offer my perspective and hopefully shared perspectives of other working moms nationwide. For the first time in our history, one of the Presidential front runners is a woman. Does this matter to us? I’d like to hear all about it from you.
